"Oh, The Places You Will Go," From Wake Forest University To Tokyo, Japan HighSight Scholars Are Off To Great Places

HighSight's mission is to prepare students for the next step in their education — college. Whether it's at Wake Forest University, or a small liberal arts college like Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, HighSight Scholars are prepared to take it all on.

Every summer, our scholars participate in summer enrichment programs that allow them to grow, learn, and develop leadership skills. As rising seniors, that summer enrichment program becomes a four-week-long language immersion program in a country like Japan or a five-week academic enrichment program at boarding schools like Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire.

This summer, the Class of 2027 embarked on over 130,000 miles of traveling to participate in various international language immersion programs and East Coast boarding school programs.

Students have returned from their programs sharing the growth they have experienced over the summer.

"Going to Cushing Academy made me realize the importance of friendships, opportunity, and stepping outside of my comfort zone. I arrived feeling like a stranger, at an unfamiliar place, but I left with amazing memories and friendships with people from countries I never imagined I would connect with, with people I never expected to make me feel so comfortable and at home, and with people who I wouldn’t have thought to consider my family."

These experiences not only allow our students to step outside of their comfort zones, but give students and parents alike an opportunity to practice leaving home- a test run for college.

"It's hard to pick just one memorable experience from this trip because everything was so great and I learned so much that I was able to bring back home with me...This trip was like a preview to college because I had to learn rely on myself. I didn’t have my mom to rely on and because I was with the same people for a month we learned to rely on each other and help each other out."

-Isabella A., De La Salle Institute

Each program is funded in part by the individual programs, with the remaining amount coming from third-party organizations who believe in supporting study abroad opportunities for low-income high school students. Our families see little-to-no cost from these programs, allowing our scholars to enjoy the experience and fully immerse themselves in their program without the worry of financial burden to their families. Additionally, this fall four students from the class of 2026 will be attending Wake Forest University on full-ride scholarships. Many of the students from the class of 2026 attribute their summer abroad experiences to the preparedness for college.
