HighSight's Mission Brings Elite Colleges To Low-Income High School Students

HighSight's mission continues to bring low-income high school students access to elite colleges across the United States.

From the moment our scholars walk through the doors as 8th graders, they receive the same mission: Go to the Best College Possible, with the Best Financial Aid Possible. Four years later, the school year is in full swing at HighSight and our seniors have already started the college application process. Starting in the summer before senior year even began our scholars met with college admissions reps, began working on their personal statements, and tackled the Common App.

This month, HighSight invited six colleges and universities to present to the senior class and their parents. They heard from Augustana College, Dartmouth College, DePauw University, Knox College, Juniata College, and St. Olaf College. Each institution boasted its own merits and showed the students the benefits of considering smaller liberal arts colleges.

This summer, in a continual effort to expand our scholar's knowledge on college, the rising freshmen and sophomores took a class titled, "College Knowledge." Taught by HighSight's college counselor, Patricia Hart, the class led our scholars through various exercises aimed at showing students how to pick a college that best fits them.

This summer, I learned that [my choice of] college matters because it can help me reach my future goals. I learned that rankings do not always matter because the right college for me is more important than its ranking.

Our scholars also learned the importance of an institution's graduation rate, the importance of need-met financial aid, and that name recognition shouldn't be the only factor when choosing where to attend.

Through HighSight’s comprehensive college counseling, 100% of our scholars receive full-tuition scholarships to elite institutions across the United States.
